Sustainable Eating
Food miles refer to the distance your food travels from where it is grown to where it reaches your plate. The further it travels the worse it is for the environment.
There are many ways that we can all help to reduce the food miles and the other environmental impacts made from the food that we eat, including:
*Eat locally produced food
*Eat food that is in season. To find out what's in season visit http://eattheseasons.co.uk/foodseasons.htm
*Eat organically
*Grow your own. If you have any leftover seeds you can always trade them here: http://www.seedypeople.co.uk/
*Walk to the shops so you don't add any unnecessary food miles
*Visit your local farmers market
*Encourage the whole family to have the same meal
*Buy food with little packing
*Reuse foil and plastic freezer bags
*Only cook the amount you can eat (don’t have eyes bigger than your belly)
*Attend U-pick-days at your local farm, this is environmentally friendly and can actually be a fun day out
*Cook from scratch, ready meals and packaged food are likely to be well travelled
*Recycle packaging and bags
*Bring your own bag to the shops
*Put your food waste in a compost heap
*Abel and Co is a company that delivers fresh, organic, seasonal fruits and vegetables to your house which is great, especially if you’re busy, but you must remember the miles produced when doing this. http://www.abelandcole.co.uk/
Sometimes it’s not always possible to buy locally produced food but there are other ways to shop ethically, including buying organic and Free Trade produce.
