Eco-Festival Season is Here

Jul 29, 2011
Our assistant web editor, Lucy Dyer looks at the pros of eco-friendly festivals and how we can do our bit even if we're not getting our wellies out this summer

Festivals can have both positive and negative impacts to the surrounding environment. One festival that is doing its bit to be green is Glastonbury. As well as advising their visitors to share cars and pick up waste Glastonbury has gone the extra mile to be sustainable.

All Glastonbury festival t-shirts are printed using water-based inks and dyed using vegetable oils, all wood used in the festival is locally sourced, all cutlery used by the market stalls is wood and not plastic, all plates are biodegradable, leftover food is put into a compost heap, all tea, coffee and sugar sold by traders is Fair Trade and more.

Unfortunately this year’s Glastonbury has been and gone and there won’t be one next year (not enough porto loos apparently) which is actually quite good as it gives the grass a chance to grow for a year.

Following in Glastonbury’s footsteps is a festival that is happening this week, Camp Bestival. About a third of the toilets at Camp Bestival are natural event compost loos. These are clean, don’t smell and don't even need any any water. Best of all, the waste is recycled in a compost heap proving almost anything can be made green.

Plus the music travel company, Big Green Coach provides low cost transport from London Victoria to Camp Bestival and back which drastically decreases the emissions produced by the festival. That’s what we like to see.

Even if you’re not going to an eco-festival you can still do your bit:

*Recycle your cans, bottles, glasses and packets

*Refill your water bottles

*Put all waste in the bin

*Avoid using aerosols if possible

*Stay in the UK, there are plenty of great festivals here so you don’t need to travel abroad
