EU Eco Initiative Encourages Trains Not Planes

Apr 26, 2011

The European Union would like travellers to take high-speed trains across Europe rather than short-haul flights to reduce carbon emissions

The European Union would like to reduce transport carbon dioxide emissions by 60% over the next 40 years and part of this plan may involve replacing short-haul flights with high-speed rail networks.

"The demand for new runways could be suppressed by building new rail networks," said EU transport commissioner Siim Kallas.

The EU is also suggesting a series of green transport goals, including phasing out the use of petrol cars in city centres over the next 40 years.

The targets also include connecting all hub airports to high-speed rail lines and connecting major ports to rail networks to reduce dependency on road freight.
