Are renewables risky?

Feb 16, 2011
Renewables have never been so attractive but there have rarely been so many risks with them says The Sustainable Energy Company

Rising energy prices and Government incentives from both the present coalition and Labour has made it essential that the UK produce 15 percent of its energy from renewables by 2020 under the EU Renewable Energy Directive.

But Dr Mark Hinnells from the The Sustainable Energy Company (SUSENCO) argues there have rarely been so many risks for going renewable.

The Coalition Government seems to have thrown all the cards in the air in one go, in an attempt to create the 'greenest ever government' but there are market risks and uncertainties. The risks are financial, regulatory, market, technology, construction and operational.

Policy changes may increase or reduce the incentive to invest or may increase the uncertainty around investing.
