Garden Birdwatch bigger than ever
Record numbers of people submitted their results over the weekend for biggest RSPB garden bird survey ever with over 100,000 forms received. And in one hour alone the RSPB received just short of 10,000 forms.
If you haven't yet submitted your results there is still time as the deadline is in next two weeks time.
“We really mean it when we say that every garden counts, and it doesn’t matter if you saw ten different birds species, one bird or none at all – it’s important that we know,” says RSPB Big Garden manager Richard Bashford.
Early results show that as well as the common garden birds like house sparrows and starlings, people are seeing a whole range of more unusual species on their tables and feeders from dippers, goosanders and little egrets to snipe, firecrest and merlin.

Bashford adds: “We simply can’t ignore trends. Volunteer surveys like the Big Garden Birdwatch first alerted us to the decline in much-loved birds like house sparrows, song thrushes and starlings. These results can help shape the work we do, and the species and habitats we focus on. If you did take an hour out of your weekend, make sure it counts and send us your results.”
