Future of South America and Caribbean shown on New Map

Dec 15, 2010
A new atlas uses satellite pictures to display the most urgent environment issues in Latin America and the Caribbean

The new atlas is the first of its kind to analyse changes in South America and the Caribbean's environment by combining satellite based images with rigorous data.

It has been produced by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and it is hoped that decision makers will use it to make public policies based on sustainable development.

The effects of climate change can already be seen in the 200 satellite images that make up the map in Chilean and Argentine Patagonia glaciers.

Mining is creating an impact in La Guajira, Columbia and Cerro de Pasco, Peru and deforestation is displayed in Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, Guatemala and Haiti.

The map is split into three, the first two parts bring together regional information, while the third outlines relevant environmental issues in each country.
