Lightning will be measured from the sky in future

Dec 13, 2010
Within the next ten years Europe and America will be putting cameras in space to monitor lightning

The new lightning systems will be placed over 35,000 kilometres from Earth and will give new ways to monitor and predict storms.

The instrument will spot lightening that goes from cloud to the ground as well as lightning that goes from cloud to cloud by looking at cloud tops.

Dr Jochen Grandell from the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meterological Satellites says: "Lightning is a very good proxy for severe weather. In fact, it is a lead indicator - you often get lightning just before you get heavy rain, hail and big gusts of wind."

The Lightning Imager will be one of Europe's next generation Meteosats and will be launched from late 2017.
