Energy Bill published to start Green Deal proceedings
The Government wants the Energy Bill published on Thursday to improve energy efficiency in homes and businesses and to deliver low carbon energy supplies.
It is the start of proceedings for the Green Deal, due to start in 2012 which will be the Government’s new way of enabling private companies to make energy efficiency available to all at no upfront cost.
The work to upgrade property will be paid back from the saving on energy bills.
Chris Huhne said “I’m confident the Green Deal will catch on with the public. It’ll make upgrading our nation’s draughty homes a no brainer. But I don’t want people to be hoodwinked by rogue traders or receive dodgy advice."
Friends of the Earth's senior climate change campaigner Tony Bosworth believes the Green Deal will do little to help millions of people shivering in fuel poverty or living in expensive-to-improve homes.
He said: "Half of those renting from a landlord or letting agency found their homes uncomfortably cold during the big freeze - we need a clear minimum energy efficiency standard to protect vulnerable tenants, rather than another Government review."
